QUEENS, NY August 12, 2019 – Building Skills New York, a non-profit organization working to provide underserved New Yorkers with good paying jobs, announced today the August Queens Worker of the Month, Edney Gibson-Dottin.
After looking for a construction job for two months, Building Skills connected Gibson-Dottin to a concrete job with RC Structures and a masonry job with RSC Group. A resident of Queens, Gibson-Dottin has been working on L&M’s Linwood Street project in Brooklyn. Building Skills also helped Gibson-Dottin find a NCCER Plumbing 1 training class at Bronx Community College, which he recently completed in an effort to further his construction skills.
“Building Skills helped me find not one but two construction jobs that have significantly increased my pay rate,” said Gibson-Dottin. “I’ve also been able to complete new trainings that will advance my career even more. I can’t thank Building Skills enough for putting me on a path to success.”
Last year Building Skills NY filled 235 NYC construction and related jobs, including a growing share of workers from Queens. Recently, Building Skills NY announced a significant mid-year increase in construction job placements and improved efficiency in worker screenings. Job placements for the first half of 2019 are up more than 70% compared to the first half of 2018.
Building Skills helps New Yorkers find work through free job training and job placement services. Additionally, Building Skills continues to provide on-the-job support to each worker as they seek to broaden their skillset and advance their construction career.
BSNY’s “Worker of the Month” monthly series aims to highlight and honor workers placed in jobs throughout New York City.
