Ah, summer in New York – longer days, stunning sunsets over the Hudson, and rising (sometimes soaring!) temperatures. As idyllic as it sounds, balmy summer conditions can turn dangerous if you don’t take the proper precautions. Here are some tips for how you can beat the heat and stay safe on the jobsite this summer.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke can hit you quickly if you’re ill-prepared for the weather. The best way to prevent heat-related illnesses is to stay hydrated. Always have water available and accessible – if possible, have it on or close to your workstation – and take frequent water breaks. Try to choose water over soda, juice, or energy drinks. D
Dress Smart
On the jobsite, you need to wear work-approved clothing and safety gear. However, choosing clothing made of loose, breathable fabric, such as cotton, to help keep you cool. Or opt for moisture-wicking fabric that will work to regulate your body temperature.
Protect Your Skin
As tempting as it may be to get a tan while on the jobsite, applying sunscreen is the safer option. Spending even just a short time in the sun with unprotected skin can leave you with a sunburn, and working for hours without sunscreen can result in severe sunburn or sun poisoning, which can send you to the hospital. To stay safe, choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which shields against both UVA and UVB rays. Opt for an SPF 30 or higher sweat-resistant sunscreen and be sure to re-apply every two hours.
Speak Up
If you start to feel symptoms or exhibit signs of heat exhaustion – such as dizziness, fatigue, nausea, or an irregular pulse – tell someone! You should also move to a cooler location and drink water. If your symptoms persist, seek medical attention.
Stay Healthy
Staying as healthy as possible will make your body better equipped to handle the summer heat. Ensuring you get a solid eight hours of sleep every night and choosing nutritious meals will help you stay in the best possible working condition. Are you ready to beat the heat on your next jobsite?
