When pursuing job placements, it has become increasingly more likely for construction sites to require proof of COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment.
The state has instituted vaccine mandates for health care workers and teachers, and Governor Kathy Hochul has hinted that these requirements could soon be expanded to other sectors. The White House also is requiring vaccines for almost all federal government workers, health care workers, and contractors as of Nov. 22.
The Biden administration also is reaching into the private sector to further mandate vaccines for companies with 100 or more employees or to require weekly testing for those who aren’t inoculated, and is urging companies to institute requirements on their own.
Though legal challenges continue, thus far most experts agree that private employers can require vaccines of their workers as a condition of employment, as long as they provide exemptions for medical or sincerely held religious reasons.
At Building Skills New York, we urge you to be aware that your employment options might soon hinge on whether you are vaccinated. We also understand that you may have some sensitivity or hesitation about getting a Covid-19 shot.
If you are interested in learning more about the vaccine, there are various resources available. The Centers for Disease Control has released COVID-19 vaccination fact sheets that contain all relevant and known information pertaining to risks and benefits of receiving the vaccine.
Research shows vaccines help prevent an individual from contracting Covid-19 or becoming seriously ill if a breakthrough infection does occur. They also can prevent you from spreading the virus to those around you. Working closely with colleagues is often required on a construction site, so this added protection is particularly helpful to mitigate any potential spread and keep all individuals safe.
Currently, all individuals 12 years old and older are eligible for the vaccine in New York City. Vaccines are available at no cost, regardless of immigration status, at many locations across the five boroughs. To find a vaccination site near you, please visit the City’s Vaccine Finder.
