How has the program changed your career outlook?

It gave me a path. Before the program, there were no steps ahead. I didn't have direction and didn't know what I wanted to do. Now I'm thinking maybe I'll be an electrician. Maybe I'll keep climbing the ranks. Building Skills NY really showed me this is a route I could take and excel in. It gave me a path to follow.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

The teachers took time out to teach us about skills and safety, and also made sure we had a binder of all our certificates and resumes to take with us when we graduated. I still use the binder today.

What type of impact do you hope Building Skills NY will have in your community?

As far as work I did after the program, we built low-income housing for people in Brooklyn, NY. That's what I'm doing now [at Amber Light Electric]. For people who are really motivated, the program helps you better yourself and your neighborhood.

What advice would you give someone who might be interested in joining the program?

Do it! Just try it. If you don't like it, then you don't have to go that route. But you'll have 5-6 certificates for a rainy day, and you can use them for other jobs, too. If you have any interest in it, I don't see why you wouldn't do it.
